Walter Benjamin - struggling to find new ways of considering experience in a confusing world - sums up the time of the First World War: “Never has experience been belied more thoroughly than strategic experience by trench warfare, economic experience by inflation, bodily experience by hunger, moral experience by those in power. A generation that had still gone to school on horse-drawn streetcars now stood under an open sky in a landscape in which nothing remained unchanged but the clouds, and right in the middle, amidst a force field of destructive currents and explosions, the tiny, frail human body.” With this torso, composed of ruiments of experience, of social and architectonic misery, of things enslaved, processes had to be developed that were shaped by the knowledge of the historic precedent, but also the impression of the “clouds”, which, being weightless and without definition, had proven the only safe and unharmed thing to survive: to conceptualise the actuality of life from the peculiarity of the clouds.

The joint exhibition by Alba D’Urbano and Dagmar Varady features works that have not been presented in this context before. Emergence takes a central role in the exhibition. The artists refer to this concept and transform the gallery into a kind of test tube, where the individual artworks initiate a close dialogue amongst each other and the audience. In Italian the word “emergenza” means state of emergency, distress, crisis. In order to raise attention a flood of images, which has a suggestive influence on perception and manipulates human judgement, is transported and distributed around the globe by the media each day. In the present exhibition, the artists, who have been working in the field of new media for years, take up both aspects of emergence, and create a situation of visual and auditive experience through their works which examines and explores “emergent” media images and attention-raising mass media strategies. The concept for the exhibition is part of a “fluid work process”. Exhibiting is connected to certain conditions, such as: emphasising the process nature of the works; a willingness to appreciate the unforeseeable, irritating aspects of the situation; to recognise the experiment as part of a greater overall structure.
